About Outlier.

Outlier is a one of a kind data visualization conference hosted by the Data Visualization Society. The fourth annual Outlier will take place online and in Chicago, USA in June 2024, 12-24.

Outlier brings together all corners of the data visualization community, from artists to business intelligence developers, working in every tech stack you can imagine and in other media, like physical art and sound, that stretch our vision of what we can do with data. Attendees stretch their creative thinking, and learn from practitioners who they may not otherwise connect with.

The program is designed to be inclusive, diverse, and creative, with opportunities for inspiration and learning. We run a public call for speakers, which attracts not only well known thought leaders, but also people you may not have heard of who are shaping the field.

Our 2024 theme connects to the big innovations, opportunities, and challenges across the data visualization field:

POSITIVE DISRUPTION

The talks will be divided into the following categories:

Infographics and Data Storytelling

Stories connect us to information in memorable ways. Blending data and storytelling together continues to be a major focus for companies and causes keen to sell a product or share a message, and technology products have continued to democratize infographic design. What models and innovations can we learn from to bring more storytelling into our work?

Business Intelligence and Analytics

Analysts make up one of the largest cohorts of data visualization creators, crafting visuals that drive business decision making, project future growth, and more. While they’re one of the most recognizable business visualization products, dashboards are just one piece of the BI world. What are the latest innovations to help leaders make data-led decisions faster?

Data Art and Innovation

Speed to insight isn’t the goal of every visualization. Data art stretches our thinking about how we connect with data, and artificial intelligence is here to stay. What are the innovations and ethical challenges that come with these innovations, and how does data art connect to the more practical disciplines within data visualization?

Inclusivity and Accessibility

Image alternative text, appropriate color selection, and being mindful of the cultural sensitivities are raised more frequently today than ten years ago. But how do we turn best practices into everyday practices to apply inclusive design in our visualization work?

Data Literacy, Data Culture and Data Teams

Data is everywhere, and charts are part of our daily lives. Even so, not all organizations provide tools and training to support a culture of data use among their teams. How can we use visualization to elevate data literacy to a global good?
